PLANTING TREES FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS
Living in Melnik offers us many benefits associated with living in a fully equipped small town surrounded by beautiful nature. Aware that quality housing and complete amenities are not the only attributes our town provides, we also see green streets and ample green spaces for leisure activities as an invaluable asset.
We are therefore pleased to announce that we have been awarded a generous grant of CZK 10,168,730. Thanks to this financial injection, we will be able to implement the project „Implementation of green measures to protect air quality in the city of Mělník – 1st stage.“ This ambitious project is supported by the Financial Mechanism of Norway for the period 2014-2021 and the State Environmental Fund of the Czech Republic.
As part of this project, we will plant over 470 new trees and 360 shrubs in thirteen carefully selected locations. Planting of accompanying linear greenery will take place at ten sites, and we also have plans in place for planting green spaces. Specifically, there will be extensive tree planting in the newly created Brabčov Park and the reclamation of the Na Ráji orchard. At the same time, we are trying to strengthen the protective forest cover in the Chloumek area.
From the urban planting you can look forward to the reclamation of the slope in Pod Vrchem Street, where we have decided to plant fragrant lilacs. 14 elegant dogwoods will be added in the Na Ráji street section, new birch trees will beautify Smetanova street, and almond trees will find their place in K Mostu street.
Outside the city, in the extravilan, we are adding large-leaved lime trees to the linear planting on Kokořínská Street. Na Průhoně Street will welcome 73 new trees, mainly walnuts, and Chloumeckou Street will be enriched with 24 dogwoods.
The entire implementation process must be completed by the end of April next year, so we are looking at a challenging but hugely inspiring period. We would be grateful for your cooperation and understanding during the period when some areas will be temporarily restricted for landscaping and planting. Together we have a chance to successfully complete the project on time.
The importance of green space is incredibly broad. In addition to the aesthetic appeal that pleases our senses, greenery in the city has many other positive impacts. It naturally filters harmful particles and pollutants from the air, produces oxygen, serves as a natural noise buffer, creates a pleasant microclimate through shade, retains water and provides shelter and food for many animals.
Trees are also natural and efficient air conditioners that do not require any electrical power. All they need is our care, enough space for their roots and regular watering in the first years of their life. Trees create a ‚small water circuit‘ – moisture flows into the leaves, where it evaporates and improves the surrounding climate. In order to use trees as effective air conditioning units, they need to grow sufficiently large, and this takes several decades. It is therefore crucial to start planting them now to ensure a pleasant and sustainable environment for future generations.
You can follow all the details of the planting and the process itself on our website, which we will update regularly throughout the project.
